Yes — in almost all cases.
Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen only two Christchurch homes where the internal pipework wasn’t suitable for mains pressure. And in a few more, we’ve found a leaky elbow or join after an upgrade — easily fixed.
Here’s the key: your home’s cold water pipes already run at mains pressure, supplied straight from the council. Your hot water pipes are made from the same material and plumbed the same way. If your cold is coping, your hot will too.
The result? Equal pressure across your whole house — stronger showers, faster filling sinks, and a better quality of life.
1. Booster Pump to Existing Cylinder – ~$1,200 +gst
Adds pressure to your old low-pressure cylinder, but not ideal long-term — especially if your cylinder is ageing.
2. Outdoor Mains Pressure Cylinder – ~$5,000 +gst
Our most popular choice in Christchurch. Frees up indoor cupboard space, comes with a 10-year warranty, and gives consistent pressure at every tap.
3. Gas Hot Water System – ~$4,000 +gst
Still an option, but declining in popularity due to rising costs and buyer hesitancy around gas.
4. Heat Pump Hot Water System – ~$7,000 +gst
Extremely energy-efficient and long-lasting. Best suited for homeowners planning to stay 4+ years. May be eligible for a Green Home Loan upgrade.
If you’re thinking of selling, we recommend either sticking with your current setup or upgrading to an outdoor mains pressure cylinder — the added storage space and performance will appeal to buyers.
If you’re staying put, consider investing in a heat pump hot water system. It costs more upfront, but you’ll save money on energy bills over time. Once it pays for itself in savings (after about four to seven years) the rest is gravy.
At Hot Water Shop Christchurch, we offer no-pressure advice (except for the kind coming out of your taps). We'll assess your home, explain your options, and give you a clear, competitive quote.
Better pressure. Better performance. Better value.
