We’ve always known that switching to a heat pump is a win for your wallet and the planet, but now, it’s a direct win for our local feathered friends here in Canterbury and across New Zealand.
Our friends over at Gree New Zealand have started a fantastic initiative. For every WHIO heat pump system they sell, they donate $10 to Birdcare Aotearoa.
If the name sounds familiar, it’s because the Whio (the blue duck) is the local icon featured on our $10 bill! It’s a bird that relies on pristine, fast-flowing river environments—the exact kind of environments we protect when we choose energy-efficient technology.
We loved this idea so much that we decided we couldn’t let the North Island have all the fun. To support our local community, Hot Water Shop is matching that donation. For every environmentally friendly heat pump system we install, we are donating $10 to the South Island Wildlife Hospital (SIWH).
The SIWH does incredible work right here in Canterbury. They are a dedicated veterinary facility that treats, rehabilitates, and releases injured and ill native wildlife. From our majestic Kea to the tiny penguins on our coast, the hospital ensures our local biodiversity has a fighting chance when things go wrong.
It’s a perfect circle: heat pumps are "green" technology. Because they use significantly less electricity and move heat rather than generate it through combustion (as with gas), they help lower carbon emissions. By reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we’re helping to preserve the native habitats that the South Island Wildlife Hospital works so hard to protect.
Ready to make a difference? The best way you can help is by donating to this awesome cause directly.
Another way is to switch to an environmentally friendly method for heating your water. When you choose a heat pump with us, you’re not just getting constant hot water and lower bills—you’re helping save the Whio and supporting the vital work of the South Island Wildlife Hospital.
