Five reasons to choose Gree Heat Pump Hot Water in Christchurch

Gree is the world’s largest heat pump manufacturer, and their WHIO Inverter series brings high-end "Inverter" technology to the hot water space—a feature usually reserved for premium air conditioning. I like this model so much, I’ve installed one at my place.

1. Variable Speed Inverter Technology
Unlike standard "on/off" heat pumps, the Gree WHIO features a DC Inverter compressor. It varies its speed based on demand, leading to a class-leading COP of 5.4. It is smoother, uses less energy, and is exceptionally quiet.

2. The "Sunflower" AI Mode
The unit uses self-learning algorithms to track when the ambient air is at its warmest during the day. In Sunflower Mode, it prioritises heating during these windows, potentially saving an additional 10% in energy.

3. High-Temperature Sterilisation (70°C)
Using eco-friendly R290 refrigerant, the WHIO can heat water up to 70°C. This ensures total bacteria (Legionella) protection and means you have "more" hot water available at the tap because you’ll be mixing in more cold.

4. Whisper-Quiet Operation
Thanks to the inverter compressor and high-quality fan design, the Gree is one of the quietest units on the market. It’s the ideal choice for homeowners with tight boundary clearances or installations near bedroom windows.

5. Crystal Titanium Enamel Tank
The inner tank features a 3-layer composite enamel that has undergone over 1,000 hours of acid-resistance testing. This makes it highly durable against the varied water chemistry found across New Zealand.

Tim’s Installation Reality Check: WiFi Connectivity The WHIO is highly tech-forward. To get the most out of the Gree+ App, we need to ensure your home WiFi reaches the installation site. If the signal is weak outside, a simple WiFi extender might be needed to enjoy full remote control.

Capacity       Suitable Household Size
200L               2 to 4 people
270L               3 to 5 people

Tim’s Sizing Note: The Tech-Savvy Pick
Gree uses an "80L per person" rule for sizing. The 200L is great for a small home, but for a family home, the 270L is essential. Because it can heat up to 70°C, a 270L Gree actually "acts" like a much larger tank because you use less of it per shower.
