Every 6 months - Homeowner Check

Ease the TPR valve

Briefly lift the Temperature & Pressure Relief (TPR) valve test lever to flush away sediment. Check that it seals up completely without continuous dripping.

Outdoor clearing

If installed outdoors, ensure the area around the base of the cylinder is free of overgrown garden plants, accumulated dirt, or debris blocks.

After 12 months - Professional Service

After the first 12 months, this initial service is vital as it determines the level of ongoing maintenance needed specific to your location and environment. To keep your system running optimally for its full lifespan, book this annual check-up with Hot Water Shop. Our technician will test your thermostat limits, flush all relief valves, and directly inspect the condition of your sacrificial anode to prevent premature internal corrosion.

Quick Fixes

Before calling for service, double-check these simple fixes:

No hot water

Verify the dedicated switch at your house switchboard is turned on.

Continuous overflow

If the drain pipe from the bottom or top valve is constantly discharging hot water, the expansion or relief valve is stuck open and needs a quick professional repair.

The 60°C sweet spot

By law in NZ, stored hot water must be kept at a minimum of 60°C to prevent legionella bacteria. Your cylinder's internal thermostat is calibrated to balance maximum health safety with efficient power usage.

Exposed pipes

For outdoor installations, ensure that the exposed cold inlet and hot outlet copper pipes are wrapped tightly in weatherproof foam insulation to stop heat escaping into the winter air.
