Understanding your system

The Rheem Optima represents the top tier of vitreous enamel storage, designed with extra-thick insulation and enhanced tank protection.

User-selectable heating

Often configured with top-and-bottom twin elements to give you rapid hot water recovery times when demand spikes.

Heavy-duty ceramic lining

Offers industrial-grade resistance to aggressive water supplies, keeping your family's hot water clean and clear.

Routine servicing and system care

To prolong the lifespan of your cylinder and keep it running smoothly, follow this simple maintenance schedule.

Every 6 months - Homeowner Check

Ease the TPR valve

Gently lift the lever on your Temperature & Pressure Relief (TPR) valve for a few seconds to clear away any small mineral buildup. Ensure it seals cleanly after you release it.

Visual check

Ensure no moisture is gathering around the element cover plates or base plumbing fittings.

After 12 months - Professional Service

After the first 12 months, this initial service is vital as it determines the level of ongoing maintenance needed specific to your location and environment. To keep your system running optimally for its full lifespan, book this annual check-up with Hot Water Shop. Our technician will test your thermostat limits, flush all relief valves, and directly inspect the condition of your sacrificial anode to prevent premature internal corrosion.

Quick Fixes

Before calling for service, double-check these simple fixes:

No hot water at all

Check your home switchboard to verify that the hot water circuit breaker is securely on.

Fluctuating temperatures

If your pressure is strong but the temperature changes wildly, your tempering valve (the valve that mixes cold water in to keep it safe at the tap) might be wearing out and require a quick service.

Tim’s Efficiency Tips

The 60°C sweet spot

By law in NZ, stored hot water must be kept at a minimum of 60°C to prevent legionella bacteria. Your cylinder's internal thermostat is calibrated to balance maximum health safety with efficient power usage.

Smart tariffs

Ask your power provider about controlled or night-rate hot water tariffs. Because the Optima holds its heat incredibly well, you can often heat the water overnight at a much lower rate and use it all through the next day.
