Understanding Your System

Your Rheem Vitreous Enamel (VE) cylinder is lined with a high-tech ceramic coating designed to withstand varying water conditions across New Zealand.

User Manual

Anode protection

The porcelain-enamel lining is backed up by a sacrificial anode rod. This rod attracts corrosive minerals in the water, sacrificing itself so your tank doesn't rust.

Mains pressure comfort

Delivers full-pressure hot water to all your showers and taps simultaneously, ensuring strong, steady pressure even when multiple taps are running.

Routine servicing and system care

To prolong the lifespan of your cylinder and keep it running smoothly, follow this simple maintenance schedule.

Every 6 months - Homeowner Check

Ease the TPR valve

Gently lift the lever on your Temperature & Pressure Relief (TPR) valve (located near the top of the cylinder) for a few seconds to flush any small lime or sediment deposits. Water should flow freely into the drain pipe and stop completely when you release the lever.

Check the Safe Tray

If your cylinder is installed indoors with a safe tray underneath it, check that the tray is dry and the overflow drain line is clear of obstructions.

After 12 months - Professional Service

After the first 12 months, this initial service is vital as it determines the level of ongoing maintenance needed specific to your location and environment.To keep your system running optimally for its full lifespan, book this annual check-up with Hot Water Shop. Our technician will test your thermostat limits, flush all relief valves, and directly inspect the condition of your sacrificial anode to prevent premature internal corrosion.

Quick Fixes

Before calling for service, double-check these simple fixes:

No hot water at all

Check your main household switchboard to ensure the dedicated "Water Heater" or "Hot Water" circuit breaker hasn't tripped.

Water Leaking From the Top Valve

It is completely normal for the TPR valve to drip a little bit of water during a heavy heating cycle as the water inside expands. However, if it is running continuously like an open tap, the valve may need to be cleared or replaced.

The 60°C sweet spot

y law in NZ, stored hot water must be kept at a minimum of 60°C to prevent legionella bacteria. Your cylinder's internal thermostat is calibrated to balance maximum health safety with efficient power usage.
